Transitioning to the NDIS

There is a lot happening behind the scenes as Minda prepares for the people we support to transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) Senior Transition Team recently met with Chief Executive Officer Cathy Miller and Minda’s NDIS Transition Team members to discuss how the transition may occur and how Minda and the NDIS can make the transition as seamless as possible for the people we support and their families.

For people accommodated at Minda, all Supported Independent Living (SIL) quotes need to be completed, and Minda’s key contact for arranging NDIS planning meetings is Lesley Currie.

“Customers and families can choose to have a Minda staff member support and assist them in their meeting with the NDIS,” Lesley says.

“Where possible, all parties can meet at their house, at an office at Minda, or families can request a meeting at the NDIA offices. The NDIA is very clear, they would like all the information first, then one meeting with family to develop the plan. The meetings may happen well before the plan is funded, and that is because there are so many plans to do. So, a family could meet with the NDIS in November, but the plan may not be funded until March – and the process is being developed as we move forward.”

For customers who are not accommodated by Minda, but who attend MyPATH, supported employment and respite, Minda will also help in transitioning to the NDIS.

Lesley says that as the NDIS is new, and Minda has the knowledge and practice wisdom of customer needs, Minda staff in the different areas will prepare a ‘Minda Customer Information’ document to share with the family, so the NDIS planner will have some comprehensive information about customer support needs.
