Ruby's home sweet home

Ruby couldn’t be happier with her new home at Brighton North. The 26-year-old, who works at Minda Catering, moved into her home along with three other young people in February.

“Before I moved here, I lived with my cousin in Findon. I left home at 6am every morning to catch two buses to work. Now, I walk 10 minutes to work, and 10 minutes home. It’s easy,” Ruby says.

Ruby started at Minda Catering five years ago.

“I used to bake biscuits. I love working with the people. Sometimes I like to stir them up a little,” she says.

Thanks to the help of our supporters, Ruby is one of 65 people Minda supports who moved into new accommodation completed as part of Stage 2 construction of Minda’s Master Plan.

Ruby has a spacious bedroom and the corridors and spaces are wide for wheelchair accessibility, with an open plan living, dining and kitchen area where the housemates sometimes share a potluck dinner. “It depends what the others want, but I like to cook spaghetti Bolognese. That’s my favourite. And I love strawberry ice cream,” Ruby says.

Outside of work, Ruby is also on Minda’s Reconciliation Action plan committee.

“The meetings are at Minda, near where I work. At the last meeting, we talked about having more Aboriginal people working at Minda,” she says.

Ruby belongs to the Kaurna people, the original people of the Adelaide Plains.

“I only know a few words now, but I want to learn Kaurna. One day I will be able to speak my language,” she says.

Ruby has accomplished many thing so far, and we have no doubt that she will realise her dream in the near future.
