Self Advocacy helps the people we support to learn how to speak up for themselves and the things that are important to them, as well as developing empowerment to make decisions about their lives.

About the Having a Say Conference

The Having a Say Conference is the largest conference for people with disabilities in Australia, where people can find their voice, speak up, be heard and be respected.

More than 1,000 people attend the conference from across Australia, and Minda is looking to again provide the opportunity for people we support to attend the next conference in Geelong in February 2019.

The number of people who are able to attend depends on the amount of money raised from the Express Yourself Quiz Night and generous donations, so we hope you can support us in our fundraising efforts!

Chris, Brenton, Katelynn and Jessica attended the Having a Say Conference in Geelong in February 2018.

The four self-advocates supported by Minda enjoyed the opportunity to ‘have a say’ about issues that affect their lives and to celebrate ability and achievement.

Jessica and Katelynn say they were really happy to attend the conference, and they both enjoyed meeting new people.

They gave a joint presentation on the second day of the conference to talk about ‘Our life and our community’, which was the theme of the conference.

“We felt like lots of people were listening to us speak,” Katelynn says.

Jessica and Katelynn say they felt good that they got to speak up, and speak about what they do including advocacy at Minda and leadership at MyPATH. They enjoyed the ‘come and try’ activities such as hair and makeup, loved attending the Red Faces and Disco night, and enjoyed exploring Geelong and having dinners out.

“My favourite moment was getting up and speaking during the open mic (on the first day),” Jessica says.

Thank you for supporting people with disabilty to realise their dreams, achieve their potential and lead happy, fulfilling lives.
